CBD: The Calming Cannabinoid

CBD’s story begins in the cannabis plant, where it is one of over a hundred cannabinoids.

Isolated for the first time in the 1940s, CBD gained prominence much later, as researchers uncovered its myriad benefits.

The compound’s appeal lies in its ability to interact with the human endocannabinoid system to regulate inflammation, support a feeling of well being. CBD has a wide and growing fan base for all it's wonderful uses from a quick topical for minor burns to more serious uses as an anti- epileptic. The research is growing but CBD is on the road to becoming a mainstay in the medicine cabinet- like it was in the late 19th century.

In a world grappling with chronic pain, anxiety, and myriad health issues, CBD stands as a beacon of hope. Whether derived from hemp or cannabis, its ability to heal and soothe without the "high" positions it as a versatile and transformative remedy. As science peels back the layers of this fascinating compound, CBD’s role in the future of medicine looks increasingly assured, bridging the gap between ancient plant wisdom and modern medical innovation.

Origins and Chemistry

CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Unlike its psychoactive counterpart THC, CBD does not produce the “high” associated with cannabis use which has led to it's wide adoption and appeal. In recent years CBD derived from hemp has exploded into the market. However not all CBD is made the same. OUI support CBD products that are created under the rigorous testing standards as products containing THC because we know they are safe, effective , consistent and tested for harmful chemicals or synthetics.

CBD and THC are symbiotic, they balance and eachother and bring out their best qualities when used together, so OUI always recomends a light or micro amount of THC with the CBD.  Especially if you are using CBD to Manage pain. Without the THC the cbd will not be as effective.

Diverse Therapeutic Potential

The therapeutic potential of CBD is vast and diverse, with numerous studies highlighting its ability to address a wide range of health concerns. From chronic pain management to reducing anxiety and inflammation, CBD has shown promise in improving overall well-being.

Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Relief

CBD has gained significant attention for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. By interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, CBD can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve mobility in conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia. Its analgesic effects have made it a popular choice for those seeking natural alternatives to traditional pain medications.

CBD works by interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate various functions most importantly our immune system and inflammation.  By influencing certain receptors, CBD can decrease the production of inflammatory molecules and increase anti-inflammatory ones, bringing balance to our body’s inflammation response.

CBD also activates TRPV1 receptors, which manage pain and inflammation. When activated by CBD, these receptors can lead to a decrease in inflammatory compounds. Plus, CBD prevents the breakdown of adenosine, a molecule with natural anti-inflammatory properties, giving our body an extra inflammation-fighting boost. Furthermore, CBD has been shown to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines, essentially helping our body’s defense system tackle inflammation head-on. As a bonus, CBD’s antioxidant properties can help protect our cells from damage that contributes to inflammation.

Lastly, CBD can block GPR55 receptors, which are involved in regulating inflammation, acting like a roadblock to prevent inflammation from getting out of hand.

While more research is needed, it’s clear that CBD has a lot of potential for managing inflammation. So, if you’re looking for a natural way to find relief, CBD might be worth exploring.

Anxiety and Stress Reduction

One of the most well-known benefits of CBD is its ability to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. CBD interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain, helping to regulate mood and alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder.

Neuroprotective Properties

CBD has shown promise in protecting and promoting brain health. Its neuroprotective properties have been studied in relation to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s. CBD’s ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain may slow the progression of these conditions and improve cognitive function.

Skin Health and Beauty

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of CBD have made it a popular ingredient in skincare and beauty products. CBD has been shown to help reduce acne, soothe irritated skin, and combat the signs of aging. Its ability to regulate sebum (that yucky puss in your zits) production and reduce inflammation has led to the development of numerous CBD-infused skincare lines for acne treatment.

Epilepsy and Seizure Management

One of the most significant breakthroughs in CBD research has been its effectiveness in treating epilepsy and reducing seizures. The FDA-approved medication Epidiolex, which contains CBD, has been successfully used to treat rare forms of epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, offering hope to patients and their families.

The Entourage Effect and CBD

While CBD alone offers numerous benefits, it also contributes to the entourage effect when combined with other cannabinoids and terpenes. The entourage effect refers to the synergistic interaction between various compounds in cannabis, enhancing their overall therapeutic potential. CBD works harmoniously with THC, THCA, and other cannabinoids to provide a more comprehensive and balanced approach to wellness.

Research and Availability

The scientific community has embraced CBD research, with numerous studies underway to further explore its therapeutic potential. Universities, research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies are investing in CBD research to develop new medications and treatments for a wide range of conditions. CBD products have become widely available, with options ranging from oils and tinctures to edibles, topicals, and even pet products. The increasing demand for CBD has led to a rapidly growing market, with projections indicating continued expansion in the coming years.

Hemp CBDh vs. Marijuana CBD

The source of CBD has significant implications. Hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD are chemically identical, but their legal status and THC content distinguish them.

Hemp-derived CBD, extracted from industrial hemp plants, contains less than 0.3% THC. This minimal THC content allows it to be sold legally across the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill, making it widely accessible in forms ranging from oils to edibles.

In contrast, CBD extracted from cannabis plants with more than 0.3% THC is subject to stricter regulations.

These plants, typically grown for recreational or medical marijuana markets, contain higher levels of THC, which can influence the effects of the CBD extract.

While the presence of THC can enhance the therapeutic efficacy through the “entourage effect”—where multiple cannabinoids work synergistically—this also means such products are only legal in states with medical or recreational cannabis laws. This distinction is crucial for consumers. H

emp-derived CBD offers the benefits of CBD without the legal complexities and psychoactive effects of THC. It’s ideal for those seeking relief from anxiety, inflammation, or pain without any mental alteration. Conversely, cannabis-derived CBD products, available in states with legal cannabis markets, may provide enhanced therapeutic benefits due to the higher THC content, appealing to patients with more severe conditions who require the full spectrum of cannabinoids.
